Starting with Salesforce is fast.

Fast forward a few months … and the business reality is seldom limited to tweaking a few fields or list views. Change is generally slow.

  • It costs time when requirements change.
  • It costs time when solutions hit surprise limits in production.
  • It costs time when managers shove half-baked projects out the door.

The net result: admins and developers are dragged away from the new to handle support calls from the old.

It isn’t a new problem.

Decades ago, the manufacturing world realised that using unreachable screws and custom built one-offs slowed down production.

Something had to change.

That’s why engineers pursued the idea of Design For Manufacturability: an approach of designing products using off-the-shelf components so that they can be built at low cost with high quality.

The same ideas apply in the software world. Your Salesforce Org should be easy to change, resilient under error conditions, and readily understood by all stakeholders.

Marketing hype all but asserts that point-and-click is the panacea for all software running in production and beyond.

This is a lie.

Business owners don’t care if you think clicks are great and code is bad. They care about running a business and keeping it running.

Time savings are achieved by balancing the effort across all specialties including business analysts, admins, and developers. Not by positioning everyone as a jack of all trades, master of none.
